Dan delivers a winter warmer of a display to finish joint top in Kibworth Alliance clash
Dan Bailey
KIBWORTH GC hosted the latest Leicestershire Alliance tournament, played out on an extremely testing wintry day.
There was a field of well over 120 golfers – pros and amateurs – from clubs across the county.
Conditions were extremely cold, making it the most difficult day of the winter so far for low scoring.
Competition was still fierce, however, for the professional medal section. This saw a three-way tie for the top between Dan Bailey (Lutterworth), Craig Shave (Whetstone) and John Garrett (Willesley Park).
They all shot 74 and ended one clear of home club pro Bryn Morris and Matthew Cort (Rothley Park). They were both on 75 in a tie for fourth place.
But the result meant that Shave, a former Lutterworth assistant, went in front of Cort, formerly attached to Kibworth, in the professional order of merit run in conjunction with the 2011/12 Alliance season.
Shave now has 66 points, Cort 63, but there are still many tournaments before the OOM is resolved.
Kibworth amateurs David Evans and Barry Gisborne were first overall in the better-ball Stableford with their total of 44pts. Runners-up were Garrett and Andy Kellor (Willesley Park) on 42pts.
Beedles Lake amateurs David Cecil and Colin Jay notched 41pts to finish third, and new Alliance members Jim Parker and David Jennaway (both Charnwood Forest), with 40pts, took fourth spot.
The pro/am section prize went to Birstall’s Ross Bradshaw and Andy Calvert with 40pts, and the am/am section award went to Paul Blount and Gary Hubbard (both Melton Mowbray), who also scored 40pts.
THE quiz night held at Market Harborough Conservative Club to help local blind golfer Jim O’Brien towards his trip to compete in the World Blind Golf Championships in Nova Scotia, proved a big success. There were almost 100 people there and the event raised more than £637, organised by Jeff Alden.
O’Brien said: “It was a wonderful evening and I am very grateful for the support of the club, its members and guests, for making it such a success.
“The money will go towards the £1,660 cost of flights for myself and my wife to Canada for this major tournament. It is a huge boost. Obviously I need my wife to accompany me on such a big trip.”
O’Brien, secretary of the England and Wales Blind Golf Association, qualified for the World Blind Championships from the 2011 order of merit in which he played in the B1 – totally blind section. Two golfers went through from each of three different sections – the other two for players with some limited vision.
THERE have been recent competitions for men and women members of Cold Ashby GC.
Karl Byron (15 handicap) amassed 43pts to win the White Tee Stableford from two members on 42pts.
Geoff Newman (22) was runner-up with Chris Allen (11) third, the positions resolved on local rule.
There was also a tie on 41pts, which saw David Shield (16) fourth from Bradley Green (3), fifth, and there was another countback on 40pts between three more members. Ashley Lloyd (22), Stephen Horne (13) and David Hoyle (23) were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively on the final leaderboard.
David Peak (24) won a midweek Stableford with his 41pts haul, three more than Selwyn Lloyd (11), second, with David Lloyd (12), 37pts, third.
A women’s team Scramble was led by Helen Caves, Isobel Robertson and Wendy Owen with their 30.8 card, while Tina Davis, Lin Ockenden and Marion Bauer (31.7) were runners-up; with Lyn Thomas, Jayne Neale, Sally Hill and Sandie Jackson, on 32.4, third.
