Mason’s new port of call
Ashley Mason
GLEN Gorse GC member Ashley Mason, who is a county squad golfer, is spending several weeks in Portugal practising and competing.
Mason (pictured above) is on a Foundation Science Degree in Tournament Golf course, which is administered by the Duchy College. This operates under the umbrella of Plymouth University.
Students on the course, which is the only one of its kind in the UK, split their time between Cornwall’s St Mellion International Resort and the Pestana Golf Resort in Portugal.
A few days ago, Mason had a top ten finish in a Portugal PGA Algarve Winter Tour tournament – in which the students play as they gain experience – with his 217 total after his 69-73-75 rounds at Gramacho. He was tied in seventh position.
He will be away until the end of March.
KILWORTH Springs GC hosted the county golf Alliance tournament.
There was a three-way tie on 3-under-par-69 between Lee Challinor (Lutterworth), Matthew Cort (Rothley Park) and Craig Shave (Whetstone).
Dan Bailey of Lutterworth was on 71 in fourth place in the pro medal awards.
Challinor collected six birdies; Shave had five, but for the second week in a-row Cort did not drop a shot. He now heads the 2011/12 professional Order of Merit from Shave, with Bob Larratt (Kibworth) third.
Shave, formerly a Lutterworth GC assistant pro, and Cosby amateur Mick Jordan, with 42 points, took the pro/am prize, with Keith Jones (Lutterworth) and Mark Ward, on 43pts, the am/am section award winners.
But overall winners of the better-ball Stableford were Mick Wells and Darren Anderson (both Cosby) with their high tally of 47pts, from two pairs on 44pts, resolved on Alliance rule.
This saw David Archer and Mark Gould (Charnwood Forest) runners-up from Dan Bailey and Ian Littleton. Another pro/am pair Ed Martin (Longcliffe) and Mark Hatton (Willesley Park), with 43pts, finished fourth.
ANDREW Aveyard (4) amassed 39 points to win the White Tee Stableford at Cold Ashby GC.
He was a point clear of runner-up Stephen Sharpe (24), from two tied on 37 – Mike Ockenden (14) clinched third on local rule from Ashley Lloyd (22).
Antonio Monteiro (16), with 36pts, was fifth; Adrian Morriss (20), 35pts, sixth, with a three-way tie on 33ptsbetween David Hunting (27), David Durban (13) and Patrick Doran (25), who were seventh, eighth and ninth respectively on countback.
David Lloyd (12), with 68 net, won the midweek medal at Cold Ashby.
Stuart Thomas (9), 71 net, was second, with Tim Miller (21), 72 net, third, and Selwyn Lloyd (11), 74 net, fourth.

Tina Davis (25), 76 net, was second; Lyn Thomas (23), 78 net, third, and Barbara Steane (15), 79 net, in fourth spot.
