Men’s squad beat the weather

A COUNTY men’s squad winter get-together was held at Kilworth Springs GC and just managed to beat the snow.
It was headed by county first team captain Stuart Marriott (Birstall).
Club head professional Michael Bent and the club’s other PGA pro Gary Coysh both took part in the event, attended by over 20 county squad golfers from around the county.
The squad included well-established golfers at county level as well some yet to make their breakthrough into county sides.
There was a question and answer session first with Marriott and county secretary Brian Tuttle. Then there was a short game coaching session on the range with Bent and Coysh, followed by a 9-hole playing competition.
Marriott said: “I was delighted by the enthusiastic response to the get-together. Even those who could not get along expressed their interest and responded quickly to the invitation to attend.
“There was a very good atmosphere at the get-together itself, which was very pleasing, and the 9-hole ‘Every Shot Counts’ Challenge went very well in spite of the weather.”
Sam Mayfield (Lutterworth) won the individual award with his 3-under-par-33 card and together with his younger brother Jack, who is a Kilworth Springs member, they won the team prize with their combined 2-under-142 aggregate after their 33-39-returns.
Four of the golfers tied on level par 36 in the individual competition – Jevann Parmar (The Leicestershire), Shaun Corby and Jonny Peacock (both Whetstone) and James Pretty (Longcliffe).
Parmar and Birstall’s Adam Dalby with their combined 36-37-143 were second in the team section.
Marriott added: “We were very grateful to everyone at Kilworth Springs, including the members, for allowing us access to their course, as well as to Michael Bent and Gary Coysh for their coaching and Jez Wilkinson, the club manager, for sorting out everything for us on the day to ensure it all went very well indeed.”
4 A county golf Alliance meeting due to be played today (Thursday) at Market Harborough GC was called off earlier this week after the course had been closed for several days because of snow and ice.
Last week’s tournament scheduled for Birstall also had to be called off because of the freezing, wintry conditions earlier in the week.
This has now been rearranged for Thursday, March 8 – replacing the Oadby venue on the original 2011/12 Alliance fixture list.
The Alliance field for February 23 at Humberstone Heights will see some of the “regulars” missing.
They will be among the 10 teams taking part in the county PGA overseas pro/am tournament in Portugal starting this weekend.
Among the pros competing in Portugal will be the two frontrunners in the pro Alliance order of merit – Craig Shave (Whetstone) and Matthew Cort (Rothley Park).
Today’s cancelled Market Harborough meeting would have been the second time the town club has hosted the county Alliance during this winter.
The previous one, early last December, saw Shave in the winner’s circle. He shot 3-under-par-67 on that occasion.
Currently Shave tops the season long order of merit by just 3 points.over Cort. The amateur order of merit is also creating keen interest this winter.
