Knockout moment as Patrick wins mentoring from hero McGuigan
It's a knockout...Patrick McCann meets legend Barry McGuigan.
HARBOROUGH’S rising star Patrick McCann – a Jaguar Academy of Sport special recognition award winner – is to receive one-to-one mentoring from boxing legend Barry McGuigan.
The award will see McCann receive a year’s worth of mentoring from the former world champion to help develop further and achieve his sporting goals.
The 15-year-old started boxing aged just ten. He represents Kettering School of Boxing and is following in his older brother Jimmy’s footsteps, having collected an array of honours on the national and European stages.
The Jaguar project also organised for McCann to attend Loughborough University to receive a four-week strength and conditioning programme in order to boost his hopes of fulfilling a dream to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
The Harborough star has notched various achievements including winner of the 2011 National Schoolboy Championships (66kg). He also captained England and was gold medallist at the 2011 Great Britain Junior Championships (66kg), and was later awarded the 2011 Schools Boxer of the Year Award by the Amateur Boxing Association of England.
McCann said: “I am delighted my mentor is Barry McGuigan. He is a legend in my sport and to be given the opportunity to have one-to-one mentoring from him is just fantastic.
“My family and myself are massive fans of Barry and it was an honour to have him present me with my special recognition award. It’s great that he will be supporting me.”
McGuigan said at the awards ceremony: “Patrick is a very talented young boxer and I am delighted to be able to help him on his journey to sporting success. He is a dedicated young man and I am certain he will make the most of this opportunity.”
Fellow Harborians have been achieving success on the Midlands stage.
Twelve-year-old Michael Wallace scooped a Midland ABA schools title in only his third contest, beating Solihull opponent Brandon Jones.
Billy McCann (13) also secured his first Midlands title after a whopping 25-7 points win over Coventry Triumph’s Bradley Goldsmith.
His 14-year-old cousin ‘PJ’ McCann, from Desborough, lost on points in a thrilling bout with Irfran Ali from Birmingham.
