High hopes for Henry while youngster Cameron moves from karts to cars

Cadwell conqueror...Henry Gilbert.

Cadwell conqueror...Henry Gilbert.

GAULBY racing driver and former moto cross rider Henry Gilbert has just completed his first full season in the 750 Motor Club Junior Saxmax Championship for 14 to 17-year-olds.

And after a variety of good results during the year, the 15 -year-old has finished fourth overall in the championship, missing out on third by just a couple of points.

And he capped off his season with a superb win in the final round, held at the famous Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.

After being pipped to pole position on the grid race by 1/100th of a second and finishing second in the race to the new Saxmax champion, Shane Stoney, Gilbert was determined to go one better and did.

He drove an impeccable race on the stunning but technical track, winning by over five seconds and setting a lap record in doing so.

Gilbert credited the success to Davison and a superb car, former Touring Car driver Chris Hodgetts for his tuition, and his mechanic Maybin.

A SWITCH to cars from karts for Harborough youngster Cameron Twynham (pictured left) has been helped by use of the iZone driver simulator at Silverstone and extensive work with his trainer Ben Spiers.

However no amount of training could take away the initial nerves as he visited the circuit for the first time out in a formula car.

But testing has progressed well, with the added boost of top Fs driver Jack Harvey having agreed to become Twynham’s’s driver coach and mentor.

The Motaworld team said they were happy with the progress and professionalism of Twynham’s approach to gaining speed without over-stepping his ability.

Lap times eventually came tumbling down, finishing with a best lap that was only one second off the pole position lap set during the race meeting held one month earlier – and this was only Twynham’s second time in a race car.

The next test is at the new Snetterton 300 track on the October 25 and 26.
