Only Bob beats par in town's Midland contest
MARKET Harborough GC's annual PGA Midland pro/am tournament was played on a testing day. There was a shotgun start for the Molson Coors event.
It produced a local winner – European Seniors Tour pro Bob Larratt (Kibworth) was the only man to beat par. He shot 1-under-par-69 to finish two strokes clear of his rivals.
Larratt birdied the 2nd, 10th and 13th holes, but saw shots slip away at the 8th and the 18th holes.
Dan Thomas, assistant to Market Harborough GC pro Frazer Baxter, was in a four-way tie on 71 for a share of second slot. Thomas birdied the 3rd and 13th holes, but also had three bogeys.
Nick Soto (Northants Co), Iain Powell (Menzies Welcombe Hotel Spa and GC) and Mark Mouland (Nailcote Hall Hotel) were all on this mark too.
Soto and his amateurs, all from his home club – P Harris, A Myers and H Larkins – shot 14-under-126 to win the team top award by 2 from Thomas, who had a club junior members line-up.
They were Ross Robertson, junior captain Matt Gilbert and Brad Eastwood. They collected four eagles and five birdies in their 12-under-128 total.
Former Market Harborough GC pro Nic Gilks (Bramcote Waters) with three Market Harborough members - David Holyland, Shirley Percival and Janet Neal, were on 10-under-130, third.
They had five eagles and four birdies in their return.
Club captain John Wilson hosted the pro/am and the presentation ceremony.
l Kym Larratt (Kibworth) made her England debut in England’s Nations Cup team in the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Douglas GC, Cork.
She did very well. She finished tied sixth in the championship after her 76-72-73 rounds for a 221 aggregate.
Her scores counted in each round towards the Nations Cup in which England with Kym and team-mates Charlotte Wild and Rachel Jennings ended in a tie for fourth spot in the strong field.
The best two of three scores counted in each round. England had a 447 total.
Kym said: “I really enjoyed the championship and it was exciting to represent England for the first time.”
She went straight to Trentham Park GC to join the county women’s squad for their big Inter County Week Championship.
“It was disappointing I could not get a flight back from Ireland on Sunday night, there were none available at all, so I was unable to be there for the first round of matches” explained Kym, “But I looked forward to the rest of the week there.”
l Sixteen-year-old Ashley Mason won the Glen Gorse club championship for the first time when he shot 74-76-150 to be four ahead of his rivals. The CSS was 75-74 for the two sessions.
Only a few competitors broke 80 in extremely tough conditions.
l There was a five-way tie on 68 net at Cold Ashby GC in the DABAC Trophy qualifier.
Gavin Cope (13) won on local rule from David Tinston (4), second, with Colin Ritchie (20) third, Fraser Walker (12) fourth, and Graham Bott (-1) fifth.
Gordon Chiverton (12) 69 net was in sixth place and there was a tie on 70 net with David Shield (20) seventh, Paul Askew (2) eighth, and Bradley Green (9) ninth.
Richard Beckingham (11) 65 net finished first in a Seniors Medal at the club.
Anthony Sheffer (20) was second, with three competitors tied on 69 net when Alfred Simmons (18) was third on countback from John Roberts (19) and Harry Lockwood (12) fourth and fifth respectively.
Ian Thomas (8) was sixth after a tie on 70 net with Christopher Parker (8) seventh.
