Harborough area rugby player airlifted to hospital

A YOUNG rugby player from the Harborough district was airlifted to hospital during a game in Oakham.

The 16-year-old Lutterworth RFC player was hurt during a match with Oakham RFC under-16s at about 12.45pm on Sunday.

Officials stopped the match immediately, as is the protocol for back or neck injuries, and called the emergency services.

A helicopter from the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance service landed on the pitch.

A spokesman from the air ambulance said: “The teenager had been kneed in his back by a fellow player and as a result was suffering from severe back pain.

“The paramedics immobilised the patient in order to help prevent further damage, and airlifted him to Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, for assessment and treatment.”

The spokesman was unable to give an update on the player’s condition at the time of writing.

Last year 10 per cent of incidents to which the air ambulance was called out were sport-related.
