Show of support at memorial cup

A FOOTBALL tournament held in memory of a former Harborough Town FC player raised about £3,500 for the club.

More than 800 players and spectators turned out for the Richard Smith Memorial Cup tournament at Harborough Town FC's Bowden's Park ground on Sunday.

It is the third year running the tournament has been held in memory of 20-year-old Mr Smith, who was found dead at his Harborough home in May 2007, and organisers said the event has gone from strength to strength.

Thirty-two teams from across Leicestershire and Northamptonshire battled it out in a World Cup-style round-robin group stage before being further whittled down in a knockout phase.

The final saw the Aztecs team beat G*ngb*ngers 1-0 to lift the trophy.

Cheryl Gibson, the operations manager at Harborough Town FC, said: "The club would like to thank all the teams that took part and volunteers who worked their socks off to make the event so successful.

"A special thanks to Brent Steed for his continued commitment each year in ensuring the event is a success and also to Richard's parents Nigel and Elaine who continue to inspire us all."
