Top-flight reward for perfect campaign
MARKET Harborough Squash Club men's Leicestershire league first team finished off a near perfect season with another strong win to secure the division two title with a match in hand.
Out of all 18 matches in the season, Harborough dropped only the first one. After that they never looked back in their quest for promotion to the top flight.
The last match was at home against Hermitage (Coalville) 3rds, who were beaten 4-1.
Although Harborough didn't need to win, the pressure of wanting to finish on a high was telling as the captain, Mark Brown, kicked things off at 5th string in a less than convincing fashion, but he dug in, composed himself and came back to seal a 3-2 game victory.
Mike Turney, at 4th string, was up against a 68-year- old national champion for his age group, who showed squash was not just a game for the young, but the Harborough man remained steady to win 3-0.
Charlie Dewey struggled against a wily and unorthodox opponent at 3rd string but won through 3-0.
With the match then in the bag, Mark Christison and Martin Geear, at 2nd and 1st strings respectively, were keen to clean things up 5-0, but Christison met a strong opponent looking to salvage something for his team and lost 1-3.
Nevertheless Geear breezed through 3-0 to record a faultless season for himself, with 18 wins and no defeats.
